Video: Andrelton Simmons protects the Braves’ late lead with an amazing play at shortstop

Aug 27, 2014, 10:23 PM EDT

Andrelton Simmons kept the Braves’ lead intact with this ridiculous play Wednesday night …

That ended the bottom of the eighth inning. Braves closer Craig Kimbrel surrendered a single and a walk to open the bottom of the ninth inning but recorded three straight outs to close out Atlanta’s 3-2 victory.

Simply the best defensive player in MLB regardless of position. Not sure it can even be argued at this point.

      cant be argued at all

Shortstop of the century right there. Awesome play by Simmons!

Rawlings put his 2014 Gold Glove on a UPS truck heading to Atlanta immediately after the 8th inning.

Rawlings actually decided to award the SS gold gloves from each league to Jeter.

Reminds me a lot of the softball play tonight except I didn’t actually “catch” the ball. Also, I kind of threw it “over” the fence. Other than that, very similar.

It’s plain disrespectful of him to flash that nifty bit of short-stoppery during Jeter’s final season.

That’s sorta cool, I guess. But everyone knows a walk-off home run (especially in a Red Sox /Yankees game) is the most exciting thing in baseball.

    That’s really great.

Tulo’s pretty damn good, but I don’t think there’s anybody else in Simmons’ league, as far as shortstop play.

Was it just me or did I hear him yell Jeter after that play
