Justin Masterson to pitch exclusively out of the stretch for his next start

Justin Masterson Cardinals AP

Justin Masterson‘s season has been godawful. He had a 5.51 ERA in 19 starts for the Indians and now he has a 7.43 ERA in five starts for the Cardinals. He didn’t make it out of the fourth inning in his last appearance, allowing five runs. So now he’s going to try something different: Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Masterson is going to work exclusively out of the stretch, abandoning his windup.

I suppose it can’t hurt given that everything else he has done has led to unmitigated disaster. But this strikes me as a desperation move. If the game Saturday wasn’t part of a doubleheader one questions whether he’d even get the start. And unless he is fantastic on Saturday, you figure this is the last start the Cards will give him, given that they’re fighting to make the playoffs and all.

He really has been god awful. Brutal watching his outings since he came over to the Cards. Just seems like he’s throwing with no confidence and well, most importantly, no control. I believe this will be his last start unless he pitches a gem. (Keeping those fingers crossed!)

And more godawful yet today (Saturday). I don’t even want him pitching relief. DFA him and get him down to Memphis.

Bernie Miklasz says that, despite both Cleveland and St. Louis denials, he thinks the Cards got damaged goods and that the knee that sent him to the DL still isn’t 100 percent.

He was great out of the pen for Cleveland last season. Couldn’t hurt for STL to try him out there.

He’s in the stretch after the first or second batter of every inning already.

      Lol! On point Mule.

Exactly! That is what I was coming here to say…except I wouldn’t have added “or second”.

Yeah, but he’ll be more comfortable right off the start of the game.

What no “Yadier Molina Returns to Cards Lineup” post? He was 5 for 6 with 3 doubles in his minor league tune-up.

Let’s say he goes to Memphis the start of next week, and St. Louis next weekend, if not sooner?

Dude he is starting tonight against Chicago.

Masterson is actually a double agent working for the brewers. The cards are almost on to him, but he’s got at least one more time to get blown up again.

You mean…blown up Inspector Gadget style?
