Yankees will wear cap and uniform patches honoring Derek Jeter for the final three weeks

It’s usually an honor reserved for players who have recently had their number retired, or been elected to the Hall of Fame, or died. But the Yankees want to sell some merchandise, people …

That patch will be on the jerseys and caps. If you really want to honor Jeter, you’ll purchase both.

“He did not ask for this farewell tour, it was thrust upon him.”

    I don’t know about that.

Before the season started, when I heard he was going to retire, I thought he was quietly retiring before the season and I thought ‘good for him, no Mo Rivera type farewell tour’. No shot at Mo, both clearly deserve one if they want one but I was pretty impressed until I realized he was basically alerting every team on the schedule that he was about to begin his final season and that their time to publicly honor him had arrived.

    A few additional notes:
    * I’m a Sox fan who hates the Yankees
    * this is really the only negative part of his career I can come up with
    * if I was at Fenway for his last series, I’m sure I would stand up and clap. Once.
    * you’ve gotta admit the man is collecting some pretty cool shwag along the way

Didn’t realize so many people detested the guy so much. He played the game for a long time, made some plays, won and pretty much kept to himself. Not even close to being a Yankee fan, but I know that Jeter produced, has numbers to show for it and maintained continuity for the franchise and MLB. I don’t think he was the face of baseball but he was of the Yanks. Who’s going to fill that void now? Hats off to the guy. At least he’s retiring as a full-time Yankee and not spending some fleeting moments leeching off of another franchise.
