Bad news for the surging Cardinals. A team source tells Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Matt Holliday‘s availability for the rest of the season is “doubtful.” Holliday left last Tuesday’s game with tendon damage to the base of his right middle finger. Strauss hears that it’s a matter of pain tolerance right…

    Sep 19, 2011, 8:30 PM EDT

    Tommy Hanson

Maybe we shouldn’t look too far ahead since the Braves are still fighting to hang on in the Wild Card race, but the odds of Tommy Hanson being ready in time for the postseason are at least looking better. From David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution comes word that Hanson threw two simulated innings earlier…

I’m not sure if they’ll pick the logo I submitted, but fingers crossed.

To the contrary, a team source tells Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer that the Phillies plan to send Brown to the instructional league following the regular season. Sep 19, 2011, 7:03 PM EDT

    Alfredo Aceves

Not that he’s the only one. David Ortiz, though, said after the first game of Monday’s doubleheader that Alfredo Aceves should be in the Red Sox rotation. “To be honest with you, the way things are going, he should be starting. It’s as simple as that,” Ortiz was quoted as saying by the Boston Globe.…

  8. HBT Daily: How screwed are the Red Sox?

  10. Exit light, enter night: Mariano Rivera is the all-time saves king

    Sep 19, 2011, 4:45 PM EDT

Who will bridge the gap to Mo?

Mariano Rivera moved past Trevor Hoffman on the all-time saves list this afternoon, throwing a 1-2-3 ninth inning against the Twins to close out a 6-4 victory and record his 602nd career save. In general saves are an overrated and oftentimes silly stat and Rivera certainly didn’t need the record in order for people to…

    David Ortiz

Terry Francona: What’s our record, DeMarlo? DeMarlo Hale: Eighty-seven and sixty-six. Terry Francona: Eighty-seven … and sixty-six. How’d we ever win eighty-seven? DeMarlo Hale: It’s a miracle. Terry Francona: It’s a miracle. Yep, the Sox dropped the front end of a double header against the O’s this afternoon. The score as 6-5. All six were…

  12. Must-click link: Vernon Wells, meme

    Sep 19, 2011, 4:05 PM EDT

This morning I wrote about Vernon Wells predictably not opting out of his massive contract after this season and suggested that his “maybe it’s just society” quote was worthy of what us nerds on the internet call a meme. I’m not creative enough to actually get that ball rolling, but thankfully Carson Cistulli of Fan…

  13. Does Prince Fielder want to join the teams who want him most?

    Sep 19, 2011, 3:36 PM EDT

National League first baseman Fielder of the Brewers watches three-run home run in fourth inning during Major League Baseball's All-Star Game in Phoenix

Jon Heyman’s latest column ranks the potential Prince Fielder post-free agency destinations. In order: the Orioles, Cubs, Rangers, Nationals, Dodgers, Brewers Mariners Cardinals and Marlins. Question: would Prince Fielder really want to go to most of these teams?  The O’s, Cubs, Mariners and Marlins are in the competitive wilderness right now. The Dodgers are broke. The…

  14. R.A. Dickey finds your lack of faith disturbing

    Sep 19, 2011, 2:14 PM EDT

It’s kind of a commercial for the Star Wars Blu-Ray release, but it’s worth watching this video just to see Christopher Walken’s head superimposed on Han Solo’s body and R.A. Dickey, dressed as Darth Vader, force-choking Mike from the FanCave.

  15. Ian Stewart wants to stay with Rockies, would take a pay cut

    Sep 19, 2011, 1:48 PM EDT

Ryan Howard sat out last night’s game after fouling a ball off his right foot and is also expected to get a cortisone injection in his sore left ankle today, so he’s unlikely to be back in the Phillies’ lineup before Thursday. Howard would almost surely play through bursitis in his ankle if the Phillies…
