The fellas over at Joe Sports Fan always do great work, parodying a range of sports topics with a strong focus on mustaches. This bit does not involve a mustache, but it is brilliant. Check out Earl Sanderson, world-renowned baseball card photographer.  He’s spilling the beans in the debut of… “Beyond The Cardboard”

  2. Tigers finalize three-year deal with Joaquin Benoit

    benoit in blue jersey

Another odd early-offseason deal is official. According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, right-handed reliever Joaquin Benoit passed his physical on Thursday and officially signed a new three-year, $16.5 million contract with the Tigers. Benoit registered a fantastic 1.34 ERA and 0.68 WHIP in 63 relief appearances for the American League East champion Rays this year,…

  3. UPDATE: OK, it was a joke that went over my head

    Nov 18, 2010, 5:36 PM EST

    face palm

UPDATE: Forget I said anything. It was apparently a joke, as Tango explained in the comments after I saw the post.  I guess my sarcasm meter was malfunctioning today. Sorry Tom. 5: 36 P.M.: I’ve long respected Tom Tango’s work, but man, this is exactly the kind of unctuous arrogance that causes people to resist…

  4. If the Rockies want Scott Kazmir, they can probably have him

    Nov 18, 2010, 5:19 PM EST

    Scott Kazmir

Buried in the middle of Troy Renck’s latest Rockies notebook in the Denver Post is this sentence, accompanied by no other details: “Colorado also has interest in Angels starter Scott Kazmir, who had a disappointing season.” First, calling what Kazmir did this year “a disappointing season” would be like calling me chubby. He had a…

  5. If wins don’t matter for the Cy Young Award, how about for the Hall of Fame?

    Nov 18, 2010, 4:59 PM EST

    blyleven

It was nice to see Felix Hernandez win the Cy Young Award today, chiefly because it showed that the Baseball Writers Association of America is past the point where they believe wins to be the ultimate arbiter of which pitchers are good and which are bad.  Well, they’ve been past it a while actually, what…

  6. Rickie Weeks is “open to listening” about contract extension

    Nov 18, 2010, 4:45 PM EST

    Rickie Weeks

No one seems to think the Brewers have any chance of keeping Prince Fielder beyond 2011, but Rickie Weeks is also one season away from becoming a free agent and told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com that he’s “open to listening” if the team wants to pursue a contract extension. Weeks revealed that his agent has…

  7. Quote of the Day II: Felix Hernandez

Mariners' Hernandez throws against the Blue Jays in their MLB American League baseball game in Toronto

The new American League Cy Young Award winner goes beyond the usual, tired cliches.

  8. Orioles “have had trade discussions” about J.J. Hardy and Jason Bartlett

    Nov 18, 2010, 3:49 PM EST

    Jason Bartlett

According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun the Orioles “have had trade discussions” with the Twins about J.J. Hardy and with the Rays about Jason Bartlett. Cesar Izturis was Baltimore’s starting shortstop this year, but he’s a free agent the team is clearly looking for an upgrade offensively. Previous reports had the Rays shopping…

  9. “Melvin: smooth. Hale: cautious. Backman: nervous. Collins: intense.”

    Nov 18, 2010, 3:31 PM EST

    Wally Backman

This means very little in the grand scheme of things, but I think it’s great fun: Andy Martino of the Daily News, who is down at the GM meetings, tweeted a quick thumbnail assessment of the demeanor of each Mets managerial candidate the moment they came out of their second interviews with Alderson and company:…

  10. The Brewers are unlikely to deal Prince Fielder

    Nov 18, 2010, 3:00 PM EST

    Prince Fielder

Jon Heyman tweets that the Brewers are leaning towards keeping Prince Fielder. It’s not easy to be trying to trade Fielder right now, given that Adrian Gonzalez may soon be available and that other, lesser-but-cheaper first basemen can be had via free agency at the moment.  And of course, given that Fielder is a Boras…

  11. Astros get Clint Barmes from Rockies for Felipe Paulino

    Nov 18, 2010, 2:47 PM EST

    Clint Barmes

Colorado has traded infielder Clint Barmes to Houston for right-hander Felipe Paulino. Barmes was once the Rockies’ starting shortstop, but moved to second base when Troy Tulowitzki arrived in 2006 and is coming off a horrendous year at the plate, hitting just .235 with a lowly .656 OPS despite calling Coors Field home. At times…

  12. Felix Hernandez wins the American League Cy Young Award

    Nov 18, 2010, 2:03 PM EST

    Felix Hernandez crop

The results have been released and Alexander Mendoza was right: Felix Hernandez has won the 2010 American League Cy Young Award.  He beat out David Price, who finished second, and CC Sabathia who took third. Jon Lester and Jered Weaver rounded out the top five.  Ultimately — and as I predicted — the voting wasn’t…

  13. Diamondbacks acquire Juan Miranda from Yankees

    Nov 18, 2010, 1:49 PM EST

    juan-miranda-yankees

Juan Miranda defected from Cuba in 2004, signed with the Yankees for $2 million in 2006, and has been stuck in the minors ever since despite consistently putting up some pretty good numbers. He may finally get an opportunity at age 29, as the Yankees have traded him to the Diamondbacks for pitching prospect Scott…

  14. BBWAA leak? Venezuelan reporter says King Felix has won the Cy Young Award

    Nov 18, 2010, 1:37 PM EST

Mariners' Hernandez throws against the Blue Jays in their MLB American League baseball game in Toronto

The BBWAA won’t officially release the winner of the Cy Young Award until 2PM, but Venezuelan journalist Alexander Mendoza tweeted a few minutes ago that Felix Hernandez has won it, and that he’s celebrating his win with his family already. I guess we’ll see shortly if he was right.

  15. Jim Leyritz is halfway to an acquittal

    Nov 18, 2010, 1:33 PM EST

    Jim Leyritz

The details and reasoning is not yet being reported, but apparently the judge in the Jim Leyritz criminal trial has just ordered that one of the two manslaughter charges against Leyritz be dropped.  I never looked at the actual charges against him, but apparently there were two distinct manslaughter charges, one being a lesser-included offense…

  16. Why are the Braves moving Martin Prado to left field instead of Dan Uggla?

    Nov 18, 2010, 1:18 PM EST

    dan-uggla-marlins

David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Martin Prado had no problem with the Braves’ request that he move to left field following the trade for Dan Uggla. General manager Frank Wren talked to Prado after making the trade and quoted the All-Star infielder as saying: “I just want to be a part…

  17. Nolan Ryan isn’t confident about the Rangers landing Cliff Lee

    Nov 18, 2010, 1:01 PM EST

    Lee-cliff-101031

Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal caught up with Rangers’ President Nolan Ryan down at the GM meetings and asked him about Cliff Lee.  Ryan’s response: he’s not giving up or anything, and he and the rest of the Rangers are going to try and sell Lee on the charms of Texas, but he’s…

  18. Scouting report on 17-year-old Cuban defector Yasiel Balaguer

    Nov 18, 2010, 12:46 PM EST

    Yasiel Balaguer

Last week 17-year-old Cuban center fielder Yasiel Balaguer defected to Nicaragua and immediately got himself an agent with eye toward becoming a free agent and signing with an MLB team. An article about the news in the El Nuevo Herald included all sorts of glowing words about his upside, including the usual praise from his…

  19. The Blue Jays are showing “strong interest” in Justin Upton

    Nov 18, 2010, 12:33 PM EST

    Justin Upton

There’s not much more to this than that statement itself, which Ken Rosenthal passed along a few minutes ago.  It’s kind of hard to analyze such a rumor in the manner we normally do, however, because (a) all teams should have a strong interest in Upton, so Toronto’s would not be surprising; and (b) Justin…
