As first reported by Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish, the Yankees are planning to promote 24-year-old right-handed pitcher Chase Whitley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday afternoon to start the club’s series finale against the Mets. It will be his major league debut.

An MRI has ruled out any structural damage in the knee, but CC Sabathia will still pay a precautionary visit to Dr. James Andrews.

Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia complained of discomfort in his landing (right) knee after allowing eight hits — including three home runs — over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Brewers on Saturday at Miller Park, so he was sent for an MRI and then placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday morning after the exam results showed inflammation and fluid buildup.

What a fun, relaxing weekend. Not just for all of us who watched races and sipped julep. It was relaxing for Carlos Beltran too.

Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez each went yard twice. And I contemplate the return of the game-winning RBI stat.

My friend Michele has a son named Whitaker who is into baseball. Really into baseball. Like, I can’t tell you how much he’s into baseball. He plays on a traveling team called the Central Ohio Saints. Go to that link. Of the two tall kids, he’s the one on the left. By the way: he’s 12,…

CC Sabathia has a new trick in his bag: Andy Pettitte did more than simply watch CC Sabathia‘s bullpen session on Monday. The guest instructor actively instructed, primarily helping to teach Sabathia a cut fastball, something the Yankees’ ace hopes to add to his repertoire this season. “He was showing me a grip with the…

TAMPA — The original plan was to go sit in the crowd and drink beer at the Astros-Tigers game, but when it was announced that Masahiro Tanaka was making his spring training debut in Tampa today, plans changed. I got in the car at 6:30 this morning and headed to Steinbrenner Field early to take…

TAMPA — Masahiro Tanaka made his U.S. debut today, facing the Phillies at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. Tanaka pitched third in the game, with CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda taking the first four innings. Tanaka was not dominant, but he was effective. In the fifth he gave up a leadoff single to Darin Ruf then retired…

I leave for spring training in Florida tomorrow. Masahiro Tanaka makes his spring training debut on Saturday. Oh, providence! Tanaka will throw 35 pitches for the Yankees that day. He won’t start — that’ll be CC Sabathia — but he will start an inning, either after Sabathia or third after Hiroki Kuroda goes. I was…

When the skinny CC Sabathia pics started circulating a few weeks ago I thought to myself “yeah, he looks slim now, but put him in that big baggy uniform and he’ll probably be a lot closer to what we usually see.” Most players are like that. Miguel Cabrera was that way even after losing a…

Yankees starter CC Sabathia tweeted this photo from Wednesday night’s Kings @ Knicks game … Now compare that to his September 2013 physique — it looks like two different people … Sabathia finished the 2013 regular season with a career-worst 4.78 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 211 innings. The 33-year-old left-hander clearly did some hard work…

The Yankees made headlines when it was announced that they had signed Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka to a seven-year deal worth $155 million. They were in need of rotation help and satisfied that need in a big way by signing the best free agent pitcher on the market. That the Yankees signed him came as…

And now, the big news we’ve been waiting for: BREAKING: Tanaka to #Yankees, seven years, $155M, opt-out after fourth year. — Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) January 22, 2014 The Yankees officially announced the Tanaka signing this afternoon. Many, including this writer, assumed the Dodgers were the front-runners. But that’s what one gets for assuming. The Yankees,…

Crazy pic of CC Sabathia at a wedding over the weekend: But, before you go acting all shocked, go read Ken Rosenthal’s column, in which Sabathia tells him he really hasn’t lost a ton of weight. Rather, he’s just toning up and stuff. It’s possible our reaction to this pic may be a function of…

Roy Halladay‘s shoulder let him down in the end, but not until after one of the best 10-year runs in memory. From 2002-2011, Halladay went 170-75 with a 2.97 ERA and 1,699 strikeouts in 2,194 2/3 innings. He went to eight All-Star Games, won two Cy Young Awards and finished second twice more. During that…

CC Sabathia was among the many observers shocked to learn that second baseman Robinson Cano will be donning a Mariners uniform, rather than Yankee pinstripes, when the 2014 regular season begins. Sabathia had been Cano’s teammate for five years, ever since he signed a seven-year, $161 million contract to join the Yankees on December 11,…

Shane Victorino stopped switch-hitting again. For the Red Sox, it’s a good thing he did. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Victorino drove a Jose Veras curve down the left field line into the seats atop the Green Monster. The Red Sox took back the lead, 5-2 with…
