A catcher pitching. A dancing United States Senator. A dude holding an angry baby in his arm while he catches it. You know, the usual.

Paul Goldschmidt and the Diamondbacks took Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers to the woodshed.

Drew Butera can’t really hit. Many of the guys in the Dodgers’ pen can’t really pitch. This seems like a classic “you got you chocolate in my peanut butter” moment.

Let’s play two! Three times! And let’s have a sweep in all three of them!

Los Angeles’ catching duo of Tim Federowicz and Drew Butera has been incredibly bad this season while subbing for the injured A.J. Ellis, hitting a combined .143 with a .393 OPS.

We’re mere hours away from the official start of the regular season, when the Dodgers and Diamondbacks will square off in Australia. The Dodgers have made some last-minute roster decisions which includes 27-year-old Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero making the Opening Day roster. The Dodgers have placed Matt Kemp, Josh Beckett, and Chad Billingsley on the…

Pool D underdog Italy claimed its second win in two days Friday, spanking Canada 14-4 and closing in on a spot in Round 2 of the World Baseball Classic. Mario Chiarini delivered a hit to the gap in the bottom of the eighth to invoke the mercy rule in the contest. It was Italy’s second…

Thanks to some shoddy outfield defense from Edgar Gonzalez, Italy pulled off a shocker Thursday, defeating Mexico 6-5 to start Pool D play in the World Baseball Classic. Gonzalez, normally an infielder, misplayed two balls in left in the top of the ninth, opening the door for Italy’s two-run inning against Sergio Romo. Anthony Rizzo…

Today’s matchup pits Team Italy against the A’s. The Italian team got here about an hour or so ago and is working out and taking BP now. They look like every other baseball team you’ll see. Except on this one, Nick Punto is probably the second best player. That doesn’t happen very often. Oh, and…

I’m going to Phoenix Municipal Stadium today to see the Oakland A’s play a game against team Italy from the WBC. It’s a warmup game for everyone, obviously. I just don’t know for which team it is a greater formality. The big names on team Italy: Anthony Rizzo. Chris Denorfia. Nick Punto, who I’ve already…

Jim Thome is looking for work and LaVelle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported last week that the Twins had talked to the 42-year-old designated hitter earlier in the offseason. Toss in the fact that manager Ron Gardenhire recently made it clear that he wants a veteran bat off the Twins’ bench…

Francisco Cervelli was listed on Italy’s provisional roster when it was announced last month, but it turns out that he will not participate in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Cervelli confirmed this morning that he has withdrawn from the tournament. As it stands right now, the 26-year-old projects to…

Minnesota has avoided arbitration with backup catcher Drew Butera by signing him to a one-year, $700,000 deal. Butera is perhaps the worst hitter in baseball, batting .183 with a .497 OPS in 184 career games, but the Twins are in love with his defense and have kept him on the roster for three seasons as…

From MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger comes word that the Twins have signed catcher Eric Fryer to a minor league contract. It’s possible that the deal will carry an invitation to spring training, but the 27-year-old backstop won’t stand much of a chance of cracking the Opening Day roster with Joe Mauer and Drew Butera already locked…
Sep 14, 2012, 6:34 PM EDT
With Joe Mauer and Drew Butera banged up, it was revealed Friday that the Twins were calling up Double-A catcher Chris Herrmann to help out behind the plate. That decision, however, isn’t sitting well with veteran Rene Rivera, who was Triple-A Rochester’s primary catcher this year: It seems Rivera thought he was promised the callup…
