A’s starter Drew Pomeranz made his minor league rehab debut on Saturday night with the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats. And it was promising. The left-hander struck out seven, walked none, and yielded only one hit — a solo home run — over four strong innings.

On HBT Daily yesterday I said Johnny Cueto would give up more than two runs in a game before Masahiro Tanaka got his first loss. Both happened yesterday, but I’m pretty sure the Nats got their third run off Cueto before the Yankees-Cubs game ended, so I’m gonna claim victory.

Drew Pomeranz was the prospect centerpiece of the Ubaldo Jimenez trade in mid-2011 and started 22 games for Colorado last season, but the Rockies demoted the left-hander to Triple-A. Pomeranz had an ugly 2-9 record last season as a 23-year-old rookie, but his 4.93 ERA was right around average for someone calling Coors Field home…

The Denver Post’s Troy Renck reports that the Rockies have signed former first-round pick Chris Volstad to a minor league deal that will net him $1.5 million if he makes the team. Troy Renck of the Denver Post says that the Rockies are interested in three pitchers: The Rockies have interest in Jair Jurrjens, who plans to play in the WBC, and Derek Lowe and Brandon Webb, who’s expected to throw for scouts soon. All three are gambles, of course. Jurrjens is coming off a horrific season and his…

Mercifully so. Ubaldo Jimenez, loser of his last six decisions and 17 games overall, won’t pitch again this season because of a sprained ankle. Jimenez finishes up 9-17 with a 5.55 ERA and a 143/95 K/BB ratio in 176 2/3 innings. He’s 13-21 with a 5.43 ERA in 242 innings since the Indians traded arguably…
