The Cubs know they can’t just get by on change-of-scenery guys and sign-and-flip deals.

Felix Doubront made it clear that he wanted the Red Sox to either put him back into the starting rotation or trade him, and then he went out and had a terrible relief appearance that many took to mean he was trying to push a trade.

Two days ago Felix Doubront talked at length about how he wants to be back in Boston’s rotation following a demotion to the bullpen and, if the Red Sox aren’t willing to use him as a starter again, he wants to be traded.

Red Sox left-hander Felix Doubront exited last night’s start against the Blue Jays in the fifth inning with what the team called shoulder fatigue and afterward he told reporters: “I couldn’t feel my shoulder. It was weird. I felt weird.”

Between now and Opening Day, HardballTalk will take a look at each of baseball’s 30 teams, asking the key questions, the not-so-key questions, and generally breaking down their chances for the 2014 season. Next up: The Boston Red Sox. The Big Question: Have the Red Sox taken the steps necessary to avoid a post-championship decline? No…

Ryan Dempster posted a disappointing 4.57 ERA in 171 1/3 innings last summer for the Red Sox and did not get a postseason start, but he was still expected to open the 2014 campaign in Boston’s rotation. That is no longer going to happen. According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the veteran right-hander announced Sunday…

With Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Napoli, Stephen Drew and Jarrod Saltalamacchia all filing for free agency, the world champion Red Sox would seem to have a whole lot of flexibility this winter. Even without signing any replacements, they have a perfectly legitimate 25-man roster ready to go: SS: Xander Bogaerts: $500,000 RF: Shane Victorino: $13 million…

BOSTON — It’s certainly the biggest start of Michael Wacha‘s life too, but Wacha is 22 years-old and kids, God love ‘em, tend to think that they’re going to have the sun shining on them forever. John Lackey is 35 and has pretty much seen it and done it all. He’s been that kid winning…

ST. LOUIS — We thought of Game 1 as a battle of aces. It didn’t turn out that way. Game 5, however, gave us what we had been expecting. Adam Wainwright vs. Jon Lester and this time they were both on their game. But Jon Lester was better than Wainwright and, just as importantly, was…

Red Sox manager John Farrell said prior to Monday’s Game 5 that jake Peavy, who just started Saturday’s Game 3, would be available in relief tonight, and that Clay Buchholz, who started Game 4, could work out of the pen once the series returns to Fenway Park on Wednesday. Farrell also declined to commit to…

These last few weeks couldn’t have been easy for Red Sox left-hander Felix Doubront. With Clay Buchholz back and ready to pitch in the postseason, Doubront was sent to the pen at the end of the regular season after going 11-6 with a 3.87 ERA in his 27 starts. He didn’t want to make the…

Going into his sixth-inning at-bat against Cardinals reliever Seth Maness, Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes was 0-for-10. He had reached base just once on a walk in the fifth inning. Fans complained that he had started Games 1 and 2 in lieu of Daniel Nava. He wasn’t even supposed to start Game 4, but Shane…

David Ortiz seems to be the only consistent source of offense for the Red Sox thus far in the World Series. He led off the fifth inning of Game 4 with a double to right-center, their first extra-base hit of the night against Cardinals starter Lance Lynn. Lynn started to unravel, walking Jonny Gomes, and…

Meanwhile at Fenway Park: Just watched Buchholz throw about 10-15 uncomfortable throws on flat ground. That didn’t look good — Lou Merloni (@LouMerloni) October 24, 2013 If this — which is still being described as “general arm fatigue” — doesn’t improve by Sunday, we may be looking at a Felix Doubront start. Or a bullpen…

Red Sox manager John Farrell allowed Clay Buchholz to give up five runs to the Tigers in Sunday’s ALCS Game 2, only to be bailed out by one swing from David Ortiz‘s bat. On Wednesday, there was no such rescue after Jake Peavy was allowed to surrender seven runs in three-plus innings in what turned…

The Red Sox won’t know their ALDS opponent until the conclusion of Wednesday night’s AL Wild Card Game, but their first-round rotation is already set. Red Sox manager John Farrell told Sean McAdam of CSNNewEngland.com on Wednesday afternoon that Jon Lester will start in Game 1, John Lackey will start in Game 2, Clay Buchholz…

We’ve heard it a million times now: the Red Sox changed the clubhouse culture for the better when they brought in Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli, Jonny Gomes and Ryan Dempster over the winter. And that’s certainly true. I imagine this has been the best Red Sox team to cover in several years, and they do,…

In the lineup at first base in his first game as a Yankee, Mark Reynolds made it count. Reynolds blasted a two-run home run to left field off of Felix Doubront in the second inning, bolstering the Yankee lead to 3-0. Meanwhile, outfielder Alfonso Soriano continued to stay red hot. The former Cub entered the…

I went to Detroit over the weekend where I took in Saturday and Sunday’s Tigers-White Sox games. Such a wonderful time. Cool temperatures, no humidity, good company, good pitching, good food, good beer. It’s really all you could want. As I watched these games and hung around a city that, no matter what else you…

It’s official. The Red Sox have acquired Jake Peavy from the White Sox and reliever Brayan Villarreal from the Tigers as part of a three-team trade. The Tigers picked up shortstop Jose Iglesias from Boston. The White Sox are getting outfielder Avisail Garcia from the Tigers and three lower level prospects from the Red Sox: shortstop…
