Ivan Nova is the latest pitcher to need Tommy John surgery.
Apr 22, 2014, 6:24 PM EST
Ivan Nova was diagnosed Sunday with a partially-torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and is expected to undergo season-ending Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. That leaves a big gap in the Yankees’ starting rotation — one that will be filled, at least initially, by left-hander Vidal Nuno.

Ivan Nova went for a second opinion after being diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament and another doctor agreed with the initial verdict, recommending that the Yankees right-hander undergo season-ending Tommy John elbow surgery.

The other owners will have to ratify the move at their next meeting, but as of yesterday it’s all but official: the Braves now own the Nationals.

It’s official: the Yankees’ season is over after 162 games for just the second time in the wild card era. The Bombers were eliminated from contention when the Indians topped the White Sox 7-2 on Wednesday evening. Just a few minutes later, they wrapped up an 8-3 loss to the Rays, leaving them with an…

Let’s check in on those AL Wild Card standings. The Rays got a 12-strikeout gem from right-hander Alex Cobb in a 5-1 victory Saturday over the Orioles to remain at the top of the leaderboard. That loss for the Orioles pushed them to 3 1/2 games back with only 8 games to play. The Indians…

Yankees starter Ivan Nova held the Giants scoreless over nine fantastic innings of work this afternoon. The right-hander surrendered just six hits and a walk while striking out seven. In fact, the Giants never had a runner reach third base and had a runner reach second only twice. The offense gave Nova six runs of…

Mariano Rivera was honored Sunday prior to his last ever regular-season appearance at Fenway Park. The Red Sox made sure that was the only time he’d see the mound all weekend. The Red Sox shook off a first-inning Yankees run with three of their own and routed the Bombers 9-2 for a three-game sweep in…

Coming off a loss last night, the Yankees needed the vintage CC Sabathia or a reasonable facsimile to show up this afternoon against the Red Sox. It didn’t happen. Sabathia was touched up for five runs on nine hits and four walks over six innings as part of a 5-1 loss. After beginning the afternoon…

Red Sox 2, Rays 0: Welcome back Clay Buchholz. It’s like you never left. Or at least the early-season version of you never left. Five shutout innings with six strikeouts before making way for a bullpen that was just as stingy. The Red Sox lead in the East is 8.5 games. Padres 8, Phillies 2:…

Call it “Deja Drew.” After the Red Sox let a five-run lead slip away, things were going all according to plan for the Yankees on Thursday. David Robertson pitched a perfect eighth up 8-7, and Mariano Rivera retired the first two batters he faced in the ninth. That’s when things unraveled. Mike Napoli, who was…

CC Sabathia hardly delivered an ace-like performance last night, but fortunately for him, his offense was there to pick him up. On the strength of a five-run fifth inning, the Yankees defeated the Orioles 8-5 at Yankee Stadium and remain very much alive in the AL Wild Card race. Miguel Gonzalez failed to get an…

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez went 0-for-4 in his season debut at Yankee Stadium and closer Mariano Rivera blew his second save in a row, but the Yankees won anyway thanks to a Brett Gardner walk-off single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th. In the bottom of the first, Rodriguez strode…

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, currently in the process of appealing his 2013-14 seasons-ending suspension from Major League Baseball, made his much-anticipated season debut at Yankee Stadium tonight against the Tigers. Prior to seeing the first pitch from starter Rick Porcello in the first inning with a runner on second base and two outs, Rodriguez…

Make that four straight losses for CC Sabathia. The veteran southpaw struggled once again last night, giving up five runs over 5 2/3 innings against the Padres. Sabathia yielded a season-high 14 baserunners (11 hits and three walks), including a fourth-inning solo home run by Logan Forsythe. His 24 home runs allowed this season are…

Chris Archer‘s recent stretch of dominance continued this afternoon, as he tossed a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory over the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. It was his second shutout in his past three starts. This qualified as a “Maddux” for Archer, as he needed just 97 pitches to finish it off. Outdueling Ivan Nova,…
