Two wins for Ohio teams, both in extra innings, both games decided by homers. Ohio is clearly the home of magical performers turning in clutch performances.

Throughout spring training the widely held assumption was that the White Sox would use Nate Jones as their closer after trading Addison Reed to the Diamondbacks, but manager Robin Ventura avoided making any sort of official announcement and now we know why: Matt Lindstrom is going to be Chicago’s closer.

Between now and Opening Day, HardballTalk will take a look at each of baseball’s 30 teams, asking the key questions, the not-so-key questions, and generally breaking down their chances for the 2014 season. Next up: The Chicago White Sox. The Big Question: Can the White Sox rebuild the league’s worst lineup on the fly? Chicago…

Matt Lindstrom will be back with the White Sox next season, as Chicago exercised its $4 million option on the reliever for 2014. Last offseason Lindstrom signed a one-year, $2.8 million deal with the 2014 team option or $500,000 buyout and then he threw 61 innings with a 3.12 ERA. His 46/23 K/BB ratio was…

Loads of baseball players are passed through waivers every August and we only wind up with a handful of acutal waiver trades, but here’s the word anyway from FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal: Cleared waivers, can be traded to any team: #Nationals’ Haren, #Astros’ Bedard, #WhiteSox’s Lindstrom, #Cubs’ Guerrier, #Mariners’ Ryan. 1/2 — Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal)…

Let the spectacle begin. Despite being handed a 211-game suspension from MLB for his alleged connections to Biogenesis, Alex Rodriguez is making his season debut tonight against the White Sox. In his first game in the majors since January hip surgery, he’s batting cleanup and playing third base. And you can count on HBT to…

The Indians and White Sox are slated to play two games tonight, but they may have exhausted all their weapons in game one. The two clubs combined for 29 runs over a nine-inning affair, hanging up crooked numbers in seven different innings as the Indians won 19-10. All but two members of the Indians’ starting…

Between now and Opening Day, HardballTalk will take a look at each of baseball’s 30 teams, asking the key questions, the not-so-key questions, and generally breaking down their chances for the 2013 season. Today: the Chicago White Sox. The Big Question: Will the White Sox again exceed low expectations? Last year at this time the…

From CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman comes word that the White Sox have agreed to terms on a one-year free agent contract with setup man Matt Lindstrom. The deal, which is only pending a physical, also comes with a club option for the 2014 season. Exact financial terms haven’t been disclosed. Lindstrom registered a cool 2.68…

Matt Lindstrom has drawn surprisingly little (reported) interest as a free agent for a guy who was a closer not so long ago and has a 2.85 ERA during the past two seasons. However, according to Dan Connelly of the Baltimore Sun the Orioles are “among several teams” making an effort to sign the 33-year-old…

We’ll be updating this one throughout the offseason. Players are listed based on their ranking in the Top 111 Free Agents. At the bottom is a listing of free agents who signed before the ranking came out, and we’ll be adding signings of players who didn’t make the top 111 as they come in. (Update:…

I would have preferred to have posted this last week, but here’s the remainder of the updated top 111 free agents column. In case you missed it, the top 50 was posted last Friday. Players in the top 111 are ranked based not on how I view them, but more on how I believe teams…

Arizona is also making moves this evening. According to the club’s official Twitter feed, the Diamondbacks declined a $1.24 million mutual option Wednesday on catcher Henry Blanco and a $4 million club option for reliever Matt Lindstrom. Blanco appeared in only 21 games this season because of a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left…

It’s getting to be that time of year, so here is the first of two stabs at a Top 111 free agents list. The other will come shortly after the World Series concludes. Players are ranked based on how I believe teams perceive them, not how I view them myself. Essentially, I rank the players…

As first reported by CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, the Orioles have acquired lefty starter Joe Saunders in a waiver trade from Arizona. Matt Lindstrom, a right-handed reliever, is headed to the Diamondbacks in return along with a player to be named later. Saunders passed through waivers on Friday and was at that point eligible to…

Jeremy Guthrie has been a mess for the Rockies with a 7.02 ERA and league-high 15 homers allowed in 13 starts after they acquired him from the Orioles in February, and Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that they’re “aggressively trying to trade” the veteran right-hander. According to Renck the Blue Jays are among…

Royals 8, Indians 2: I keep hitting refresh on the scoreboard but nothing changes so, apparently, this is correct and the Royals actually won a game. Billy Butler hit two homers as Kansas City beat up on Ubaldo Jimenez. Mets 5, Marlins 1: David Wright hit a two-run homer, giving him 735 RBI in his…
