I only watched a little baseball last night. Watched a lot of “Night Court” though.

From Tim Britton of the Providence Journal comes word that Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli was removed from Tuesday night’s series-opener against the White Sox with a dislocation of his left ring finger. X-rays were negative, meaning he does not have a fracture.

The A’s remind me of someone. And a couple of rainouts remind me of my favorite movie ever.

    Jose Bautista

The Blue Jays 2013 plan worked out pretty well for their second game in 2014. And Jonathan Papelbon shows us the meaning of accountability. In his own special way.

  8. Scouts from the Pirates and Brewers are watching Mike Carp

    Mar 2, 2014, 5:15 PM EDT

    Mike Carp

Mike Carp recently offered to learn third base for the Red Sox, a move not entirely based in altruism as it would give the left-hander some much-needed playing time. Carp had a great 2013 for the Red Sox, posting an .885 OPS in 243 plate appearances, 215 of them against right-handed pitchers. But there’s no…

  9. Jonny Gomes looks different

New season, new facial hair for Jonny Gomes: He done did it!! I might have to be next pic.twitter.com/UvSzToz5Yt — Mike Napoli (@MikeNapoli25) February 13, 2014   I mean to make no moral or personal comparisons between the two, but I feel like I’ve seen these pictures before.

  10. Jonny Gomes got a giant, hideous, glorious tattoo commemorating the 2013 World Series

    Feb 7, 2014, 1:00 PM EDT

    Jonny Gomes scores

On the one hand: my biggest objection to ever getting a tattoo is that I can’t think of anything I could commit to that I one day wouldn’t regret or be embarrassed by or something. Say what you want about Jonny Gomes‘ tattoo, but you know he’ll cherish the 2013 season and World Series until…

Here’s the rundown of where this winter’s top 150 free agents are landing, continuously updated throughout the offseason. Re-signings are posted in red, while players signing with new teams are in blue. Stars denote players who received qualifying offers and thus will cost their new team a draft pick if they sign elsewhere. (Non-tenders have…

  12. A bunch of players were claimed off waivers today

Today we saw an unusual amount of players claimed off waivers. They can probably best be described as 40-man roster stocking stuffers. Here’s a quick look at the busy day of transactions: The Blue Jays claimed third baseman Brent Morel off waivers from the White Sox Morel hit 10 homers in 126 games with the…

  13. Red Sox, Brewers among teams to indicate interest in Logan Morrison

    Dec 6, 2013, 10:20 PM EDT

    Logan Morrison Getty

The Marlins signed Garrett Jones to a two-year, $7.5 million deal this afternoon, effectively squeezing Logan Morrison out. Instantly, rumors began to fly involving Morrison in a potential trade. Jon Morosi of FOX Sports tweets that the Red Sox and Brewers have checked in, though nothing is imminent. Morrison has had trouble staying on the…

  14. Mike Napoli agrees to two-year, $32 million deal with Red Sox

    Dec 6, 2013, 9:20 PM EDT

    Mike Napoli Getty

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports is reporting that the Red Sox are bringing Mike Napoli back. They have signed the 32-year-old first baseman to a two-year, $32 million deal, adding to what has been yet another exciting day of hot stove action across baseball. It’s quite the raise from last season’s one-year, $5 million deal (though…

  15. The Mariners are interested in Mike Napoli

    Nov 26, 2013, 11:33 AM EDT

    mike napoli beard getty

This is not a repeat from last winter, when the Mariners were in pretty serious negotiations with Mike Napoli but backed out when his hip problems presented themselves. This is new interest, reports Ken Rosenthal, who is unsure how serious the M’s are this time around, but who are definitely in on Napoli now. And…

  16. The Red Sox checked in with the Dodgers about Matt Kemp

    Nov 22, 2013, 10:20 PM EDT

Los Angeles Dodgers v Arizona Diamondbacks

While the Dodgers aren’t overtly shopping Matt Kemp, teams are aware of their outfield situation in which they have four capable players for three positions. As a result, the Dodgers have been taking some phone calls from teams interest in Kemp. The Red Sox are the latest to inquire, according to Nick Cafardo of the…

  17. Tigers win big in shedding Prince Fielder’s contract

    Nov 20, 2013, 9:01 PM EDT

    Prince Fielder

Give lots of credit to Dave Dombrowski; the potential nightmare back half of Prince Fielder‘s nine-year, $214 million contract is no more. Instead, Fielder and the $168 million he’s still owed is gone after two mildly disappointing seasons in Detroit, with Ian Kinsler‘s more palatable deal coming back. The Tigers sent along $30 million in…

  18. Could Mike Napoli return to the Rangers?

    Nov 14, 2013, 10:15 PM EDT

    Mike Napoli Getty

Mike Napoli spent two years with the Rangers before latching on with the Red Sox last offseason. Now there’s increased chatter that a return to Texas could be in his future. Some executives are convinced that Texas will emerge as Boston's greatest competition for Mike Napoli; his 1B play an eye-opener for scouts.— Buster Olney…

  19. Rockies interested in Mike Napoli, James Loney, Justin Morneau

    Nov 14, 2013, 2:14 PM EDT

    mike napoli getty

Reports have varied regarding what type of offer the Red Sox have made to re-sign Mike Napoli, but in the meantime Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies have expressed interest in the free agent first baseman. Colorado’s first-round pick is protected, so signing Napoli would cost them a second-rounder instead after…

  20. Red Sox GM Ben Cherington voted Sporting News Executive of the Year

    Ben Cherington Getty

After being the architect of a team which went from worst to first in the American League East and scored an eventual World Series victory over the Cardinals, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington has been voted as the Sporting News Executive of the Year. The award was voted on by a panel of 31…

    Nov 11, 2013, 3:36 PM EDT

    Minnesota Twins v Atlanta Braves

UPDATE: All 13 players who received a qualifying offer have declined it. ========== The deadline for free agents to accept or decline qualifying offers is 5:00 p.m. eastern time today, so I’ll update this list with decisions as they become known: – Carlos Beltran, Cardinals: Declined – Robinson Cano, Yankees: Declined – Shin-Soo Choo, Reds:…

  22. UPDATED: Everything about today’s qualifying offer deadline

    Nov 4, 2013, 5:10 PM EDT

    Robinson Cano

Here’s the wrap on how Monday’s qualifying offer deadline went down. First, here’s a quick guide to the qualifying offers game: Teams are allowed to make $14.1 million qualifying offers to free agents they’ve employed for at least a year and thus secure a draft pick if they depart. That pick will come immediately following the…

  23. The Rockies will go after Carlos Ruiz

    Nov 4, 2013, 3:30 PM EDT

    Carlos Ruiz AP

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies will pursue free agent catcher Carlos Ruiz. My guess is that this begins the Wilin Rosario: first baseman experiment in earnest. For Mr. Rosario is a truly gifted hitter and a truly not-very-good defensive catcher. He’s a future Mike Napoli. Except Napoli used to catch…
