Astros claim Alex Presley off waivers from Twins

Alex Presley entered spring training atop the Twins’ center field depth chart, but lost the starting job to Aaron Hicks and now he’s headed to Houston after the Astros claimed him off waivers.

Presley is better suited to be a fourth outfielder anyway, so it’s curious that the Twins didn’t keep him around in the role even after deciding on Hicks as the starter. They currently don’t have a second outfielder capable of playing center field on the roster.

Presley is a good defender in the corners and stretched in center, and he’s a 28-year-old career .264 hitter with a .715 OPS in 232 games. He was acquired by the Twins from the Pirates as part of the Justin Morneau trade last season.

Announcement: HardballTalk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $100,000 Fantasy Baseball league for Opening Day’s games (March 31). It’s $25 to join and first prize is $15,000. Starts at 1:05pm ET on Opening Day. Here’s the FanDuel link.

Nice move that should reduce the number of potential losses this season to 98 from 100.

      Twins or Astros?

      • proudlycanadian - Mar 27, 2014 at 3:08 PM

Astros, as the Twins still have Mauer.

thank you for your kindness PC

      I’ll take it.

It the A’s place Michael Taylor on waivers (as predicted by Heyman), Houston will have another chance to upgrade their outfield.

    • jkaflagg - Mar 28, 2014 at 5:23 PM

That would be interesting, since Taylor was once traded for the recently released can’t-miss prospect Brett Wallace….

Will someone please tell me when the Twins are gonna pick up players instead of get rid of them! Let’s splash the pot a little and grab somebody GOOD rather than make space for someone of less value…or no one!!

    • pmcenroe - Mar 27, 2014 at 3:44 PM

Pretty unlikely you are going to pickup any impact players off waivers in the waning days of ST. If they were “GOOD” they would be sticking on 25-man rosters.

I’m curious how the outfield depth plays out. Fowler in center is a lock. They certainly not long on talent elsewhere, but if George Springer is not up by June they may face armed rebellion in Houston. With Fowler in place I assume Springer will grab one of the outfield positions.

How about a 1st baseman and more pitching?

    • rollinghighwayblues - Mar 27, 2014 at 3:24 PM

Hey, you already had Wallace for a good amount of time. Don’t get too greedy.

      • stex52 - Mar 27, 2014 at 3:44 PM

No, sadly, we had Wallace for a bad time. That’s why they call them prospects; you never know until they actually face major league pitching.

    • jeffa43 - Mar 27, 2014 at 6:01 PM

Clearly you have not been paying attention my brother…

Grossman is hands down, no questions asked, the best hitting OF we have. He has Biggio qualities.
Kid is tearing up everything since July.

      Fowler is a high paid?
Springer will be up in June.
      Hoes will be awesome.

I would like to see what Presley could do as a starter for a full season. I think he would surprise some people.

The Twins now have Jason Bartlett, who hit .086 in the spring, hasn’t played in a MLB game since May of 2012, and who has NEVER PLAYED OUTFIELD IN HIS PRO CAREER, as their backup outfielder on the 25 man roster. What an absolute joke this organization has become. Bartlett is now the second Gardy Guy to make the 25 man roster who doesn’t even belong in pro baseball anymore, with Jason Kubel being the other. Oh, and Kubel is probably going to start the year batting 3rd in the Twins lineup.

Presley will hold the cf spot down, capable ball player. never had a chance in Pittsburgh. with cutch and marte.

  8. happytwinsfan - Mar 27, 2014 at 8:18 PM

did they really think that a perfectly serviceable fourth outfielder like pressely would clear waivers? the astros were the first in line to take him and i betcha they weren’t the only ones lined up. do they really think that they can play the season with only one guy capable of covering center field without a bicycle?

god i hope they know something i don’t know. oh well, sadtwinsfan is feeling very smug and drunkentwinsfan is very happy.

The Twins sure are using that new stadium revenue to increase their payroll to be competitive. What a joke. Should have let them rot in the metrodome.

So this means Pressley will play out of his mind this year, right?
