Hank Aaron is getting vile racist hate mail in retaliation for pointing out that racism still exists

Apr 15, 2014, 1:19 PM EDT

Hank Aaron AP AP

This is both ironic and pathetic. Last week, as we celebrated the anniversary of Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth’s home run record, Aaron recounted the hate mail and threats he received back in the 70s as he approached the milestone. In doing so, he noted that racism isn’t dead. It’s just changed and has become more insidious.

Some people got mad at that. So mad that they decided to send racist hate mail to Aaron. From Bob Nightengale at USA Today:

Sheer racism, exposed in vile letters directed to Hall of Fame great Hank Aaron, have poured into the Atlanta Braves offices this past week.

Yes, it was like 1974 all over again, the year he broke Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record, with letters laced with the most hateful epithet known to African Americans.

“Hank Aaron is a scumbag piece of (expletive) (racial slur)” a man named Edward says in an e-mail to the Braves front office and obtained by USA TODAY Sports.

Edward invokes the epithet five times in four sentences, closing with, “My old man instilled in my mind from a young age, the only good (racial slur) is a dead (racial slur).”

OK, dude. We see your point. Apologies. There is no racism anymore. Hank Aaron was wrong to even suggest it.

Good lord.

The ideologues that are commenting here are so twisted and set in their ways commenting further on this story would just be a waste of time. It’s always struck me as funny though that when a dem makes a generalized comment based on a stereotype, it’s prob true. When a conservative does, he’s probably a racist. The double standard that exists is sickening.

Well, we sure are glad that you decided it would be a waste of time to comment further – and were right, too.

So, a racist complaining about being called a racist. How about trying NOT to be a racist?

It’s intellectually lazy to just label Republicans as bigots & Democrats as open-minded & diverse (not saying you are labeling ALL R’s as racists…just the general tone I’ve seen on this board). First off, I don’t see much of a difference between Republicans & Democrats in Congress. One group is just pushing towards Socialism a little faster than the other…both are equally guilty of bankrupting our children & our children’s children when it comes to wasteful spending that can NEVER be repaid & Ponzi schemes like Social Security & Medicare. I find it ironic that it was Democrats who were the party of Jim Crow. Guess which two Democratic senators filibustered Pres. Eisenhower’s original civil rights bill to the point where it was toothless once passed? ANS: LBJ & JFK. Sure LBJ saw the light as POTUS and new it was career suicide to not finally embrace civil rights BUT look what he did to the black community w/ his “Great Society”. Ask yourself, “Why are 70% of black kids in America today fatherless?” If you & others on this page are going to pigeonhole the Republicans for being racist then I would offer one could say that the Democratic Party has enslaved black Americans today insofar as the majority of their family units have been destroyed by the entitlement society. While it’s disaffected the white community as well (more whites are on welfare than blacks), Dems still can’t answer credibly the reason for the skyrocketing of the fatherless rate among black folks vs all other races of Americans.

One glance at this comment section and it’s clear to see how someone could come away with a negative view of the Republican Party based on the actions of a few. Good lord, the ignorance and outright stupidity is staggering.

Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney: what do you expect. Ted Cruz! What an idiot.

  8. hateonlyhatred - Apr 16, 2014 at 3:20 PM

Anyone who thinks there aren’t racists in the Democratic Party is a fool. Racism comes from all walks of life and many of them vote for Democrats. The Democratic Party is great at purchasing poor people’s votes. Poor people who are enslaved by the Democratic Party because they believe in restricting business. Businesses that could employ them and make their life better. They enslave these people through welfare programs designed to keep them poor. They purchase these votes by taking *wealthy people’s money and giving it to the poor. *Actually, they take too much middle class money these days as well. I’m tired of seeing people on food stamps driving new vehicles and walking around in $100+ Jordans. Feed yourself damn it! Have some pride! You should have to be barefoot and without a vehicle to be on food stamps.

    All Conservatives are actually Klansmen?

    How inspiring, Hammerin’ Hank!

Boy, do I feel like a total jackass for having done ANY work on the history of UCLA football in the late 1930s!!! … The good news to report is, this Conservative Klansman is discontinuing the celebration of Kenny Washington, Woody Strode and Jackie Robinson immediately. I apologize to all Progressive Liberal Democrats for having had the desire to write about that topic in the first place.

Being so conscious of what a complete Nazi Hater I really am, I will be happy to delete all UCLA football articles, or any other articles which are found to be undesirable by the Lynch Mob, immediately following any and all requests.

You sound like an first class a-hole.

  10. amecass - Apr 16, 2014 at 9:04 PM

ok, all the talk about dems and repubs being racist has what to do with the racists still sending letters to Hank Aaron? What is established is that he is still getting racist letters as he did in back in 70’s. Does it matter if the racist people sending the racist letters are democrats or republicans?

    • jimeejohnson - Apr 16, 2014 at 9:59 PM

Nope. They’re opposite sides of the exact same coin.

    • scripturepassion - Apr 17, 2014 at 6:36 AM

let’s not forget that Democrats were also supporters of segregation in the 1960s.

  11. jimeejohnson - Apr 16, 2014 at 9:59 PM

Go f+ck yourself racist scumbags. And tell your parents I said the same to them.

I am sick of double standards. I am sick of this BS that the republicans are hindering Obama from doing anything.

that is just. A BS excuse.

a lot of what Obama is trying to do is..not good for this country, People better wake up and realize that this guy has an agenda. And he is acting like Hitler did when Hitler took control of Germany. He is the most unqualified president we have ever had, worst than Jimmy Carter who was pretty bad, He doesn’t have qualifications that support him being president. he doesn’t handle foreign relations with a backbone, and he is weak dealing with Russia and other countries. he is a loser who should have never been in office. Now I never mentioned his color at all but his lack of presidential skills and qualifications but I will be called racist because That is what happens when you become critical of the job he Has done. double standard. Try and hold him accountable and you are realist. so black people aren’t accountable for anything.
sadly have people who can’t think for themselves and follow the dmo party like sheep.

    • jimeejohnson - Apr 19, 2014 at 12:33 PM

Yet that pea brain loser “Lil” gw bush-Leage practically destroyed the United States with his agenda, but that’s ok for useful pawns like you. Your kind is slowly dying off, although there will always be right wing clones of their pea brain right wing parents, like YOU!

    • zemongoose - Apr 21, 2014 at 6:26 AM

You may or may not be a racist. Geopolitics, though, are way beyond your limited intellectual capabilities.

  13. jimeejohnson - Apr 16, 2014 at 10:07 PM

Republicans tend to be ignorant which makes being racist that much easier. Take Ted Nugent and stick him up your collective right wing a$$es. Aaron is right and you can’t take it right wing bass turds. Suck it up narrow minded losers.

  14. scripturepassion - Apr 17, 2014 at 6:32 AM

yes, there are those who are racists and their actions are reprehensible.

That does not excuse Aaron’s own racist comments that Republicans treat the president like the KKK. Aaron words demonstrate his reverse racism. The difference is our liberal culture supports reverse racism.

  15. scripturepassion - Apr 17, 2014 at 6:41 AM

the article cites one piece of mail when trying to demonstrate Aaron was “flooded” with racists messages.

People have every right to be mad at Aaron’s racist comments that Republicans treat the President like the KKK. It seems if you disagree with the President, even if you’re a black Republican, you’re labeled a racist.

Were there many racist messages or many angry messages?

  16. remembering1991 - Apr 19, 2014 at 10:27 AM

I am a huge Braves fan and certainly not racist, but you really took Hammerin’ Hank’s comments out of context and made it look like someone is just denying racism. OF COURSE there is still racism. That isn’t the point. Here is what Hank said. I’ll let the fair-minded people determine whether he went a little over the line, and perhaps, dare I say, PREJUDGED ALL Republicans (ahem…isn’t that being a bigot, too?).

“President Obama is left with his foot stuck in the mud from all of the Republicans with the way he’s treated. The bigger difference is back then they had hoods. Now they have neckties and starched shirts.” — Hank Aaron

  17. jimeejohnson - Apr 19, 2014 at 12:31 PM

One thing about racists: they are all dimwit clones of their pea brain parents.
