These are the Mets’ uniforms today. Eww.

Apr 21, 2014, 3:30 PM EDT

You know, just because the impulse to wear something is a good one doesn’t mean that what you’re wearing looks good:

This is bad even by camo uniform standards. And those are pretty bad standards to begin with.

      To the max.

  2. thomas844 - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:32 PM

These really aren’t all that bad…

    • chc4 - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:35 PM

      Only to a blind person.

      • Caught Looking - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:33 PM

        Or Majestic.

      • spudchukar - Apr 21, 2014 at 7:47 PM

Why not wear Camo if you are the Mets, nobody wants to see them anyway.

  3. asimonetti88 - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:36 PM

They’re not that bad and they’re for a good cause. The Padres had a Military Appreciation Night last night. It was cool seeing the whole stadium signing the Marine’s Hymn. They gave the Marines Padres jersey shirts. Great work by the Padres, great work by the Mets.

    • historiophiliac - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:37 PM

I thought you were a libertarian.

      • asimonetti88 - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:39 PM

I am. And I support our troops. I would much rather have these young men and women be at Padres games than at war in Iraq or Afghanistan.

      • historiophiliac - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:55 PM

        Have a nice day.

They need to get the “Report Comment” button working on the third deep in threads.

    • asimonetti88 - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:21 PM

Not sure why it’s such an unpopular opinion to give praise to the Padres and Mets for having Military Appreciation Nights.

      • Old Gator - Apr 21, 2014 at 5:10 PM

I don’t think that’s the issue. The issue is that the uniforms look crappy – more like someone was standing on the other side of a mud puddle from a fast moving bus than they do like camouflage per se.

      • gloccamorra - Apr 21, 2014 at 5:40 PM

OG, those ARE the actual camo pattern used by the military. The old leaf green camos are in storage, all our most recent military adventures were in desert climates. The Marines still hold the tropical camos in ready, in case Aruba or St. Tropez act up.

      • chc4 - Apr 21, 2014 at 6:19 PM

Uh pretty sure you are missing the point.

      • Balladeer - Apr 21, 2014 at 6:59 PM

Was thinking the same thing. I think the jerseys are kind of ugly, but the sentiment’s nice. Not sure what about this whole deal is causing historiophiliac to be such a jerk.

      • historiophiliac - Apr 21, 2014 at 11:53 PM

How was I a jerk? I asked a question out of curiosity and ended the conversation with well-wishes. What’s wrong with that?

    • anxovies - Apr 21, 2014 at 7:11 PM

I was in boot camp way back when and they actually let us go to a Chargers game. It was something good in an otherwise miserable time. Of course, like everything good in boot camp the drill instructors spoiled it for us afterward, that’s what they are there for.

  4. cktai - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:39 PM

Camo is can come in handy during a baseball game. For example when you employ the shift, the batter won’t be able to recognise it. However, getting force outs is significantly harder because the umpire can’t see if the fielders foot is on the bag.

    • fissels - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:29 PM

And you can sneak into the stands for beer and nachos

  5. chargrz - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:40 PM

They still look better than Miami’s uni’s.

    • Old Gator - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:59 PM

Kiss looked better than the Feesh’s uniforms.

  6. baberuthslegs - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:42 PM

It looks like a jigsaw puzzle exploded.

  7. hojo20 - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:43 PM

I miss the days of teams just having one home uniform. This is garbage.

    • Kevin S. - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:08 PM

Blame the public that buys all of these stupid jerseys. Why do you think teams have six alternates? $130 a pop, that’s why.

  8. 18thstreet - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:45 PM

I appreciate the desire to honor the troops, but I feel this trivializes their sacrifice.

And as long as teams sell these jerseys without donating 100 percent of the profits to (for example) the USO or the Wounded Warriors Project, I think it’s also crass.

  9. tfbuckfutter - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:46 PM

    Critiquing outfits?

Sounds like something a woman would do.

    • historiophiliac - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:55 PM

      Shut up, honkey.

      • tfbuckfutter - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:03 PM

I’m going to guess few will get the joke.

  10. seanwasamarine - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:54 PM

The whole “show your patriotism” thing is really starting to get old. I respect people’s recognition, but it’s bad when it’s overdone.

    • babyfarkmcgeezax - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:58 PM

You have a problem with shallow, pissing contest patriotism? Why do you hate America?

      • Old Gator - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:00 PM

Careful – you’ll awaken Poor Dim Barry.

    • nbjays - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:59 PM

Yep, the seventh inning stretch is for “Take Me Out To The Ballgame”.

  11. babyfarkmcgeezax - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:56 PM

Criticizing these uniforms means Craig hates America and doesn’t support the troops.

  12. gbart22 - Apr 21, 2014 at 3:58 PM

Anything camo is always terrible looking. I wish baseball teams wouldn’t do this. Leave it to the military where it belongs and even that is questionable in terms of appearance alone.

    • gloccamorra - Apr 21, 2014 at 5:44 PM

They’re not exactly meant for fashion, or to help the player stand out. They’re intended to send a message to the troops on the day celebrating a “shot heard ’round the world.”

  13. Old Gator - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:01 PM

“Anything camo is always terrible looking.”

Tell that to the treefrogs out back.

    • nbjays - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:26 PM

      I would if I could find them…

  14. steveohho - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:04 PM

    Militarist Monday is more accurate.

Tomorrow, Torture Tuesday or maybe its Water Board Wednesday?

At the end of the week, how about Fascist Friday?

    • crisisofinfinitephils - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:27 PM

      How about STFU Saturday?

    • 18thstreet - Apr 21, 2014 at 5:01 PM

      Wrong blog.

    • Old Gator - Apr 21, 2014 at 5:15 PM

I have no problem with honoring our men and women who serve with bravery and pride. It’s when the politicians who send them idiotically into harm’s way in unnecessary wars at the bidding of the banks and oil companies get to throw out the first pitch that I want to throw up.

      • asimonetti88 - Apr 21, 2014 at 6:21 PM

  15. idolized1 - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:12 PM

I don’t think they are completely terrible, but they are certainly better than all of those disgusting Nike football uniforms coming out year after year!

Have you guys caught a glimpse of some of them? Like Tampa Bays? Or hell, even some of the college ones?

Give me an ugly camo jersey any day for my team than any of the hideous designs Nike would make.

    • Wesley Clark - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:31 PM

What is this “football” that you speak of?

      • gloccamorra - Apr 21, 2014 at 5:49 PM

I know! I know! They have this striped ball they kick around in Brazil.

    • asimonetti88 - Apr 21, 2014 at 6:23 PM

Oregon and Maryland’s college football jerseys are awful. Maryland’s is by Under Armour. I don’t care if it’s the Maryland state flag, it’s ugly as all get up.

  16. yahmule - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:15 PM

Not into the digital camo look.

  17. disgracedfury - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:19 PM

Yes Mets are trying anything they can but winning and spending money.Theose military uniforms would be good if we were a third world country. I bet Matt Harvey complains about this.

  18. olafisberserker - Apr 21, 2014 at 4:28 PM

As a Padres fan and a lifelong San Diego resident, I will say I enjoy the Military Appreciation Day each Sunday. It’s niceto see the Marines and Sailors get a chance to catch a ballgame and be honored. But the camo uni’s do become a little much after the 6th or 7th Sunday of the season.

    • gloccamorra - Apr 21, 2014 at 5:51 PM

But when the Padres outfit little leaguers with old Padres uniform styles, all the kids want the camo.

  19. bostonfrogs - Apr 21, 2014 at 5:34 PM

Any way you look at it, it all boils down to just another excuse to market and sell a new uniform to the masses at fan shops. SO sick of shoe and clothing companies thinking the game (baseball, college football, you name it) is all about THEM.

  20. mgv38 - Apr 21, 2014 at 5:40 PM

Camo uniforms are, obviously, for the bush leagues.

    • gloccamorra - Apr 21, 2014 at 5:53 PM

The camo style shown is for the desert dunes. They’ll stick out like a sore thumb in the bush leagues.

  21. droman79 - Apr 21, 2014 at 7:43 PM

Just accuse these jerseys of being on PED’s and Craig will defend them… Simple really.
