VIDEO: Jose Abreu slugs MLB-leading 10th home run

Apr 27, 2014, 5:21 PM EDT

We have a strong early favorite for American League Rookie of the Year honors. White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu, who was signed to a six-year, $68 million contract last October after defecting from Cuba in August, slugged his MLB-leading 10th home run of the season Sunday against the Rays …

Those throwback alternate uniforms really tie the highlight together. Abreu is sporting a .962 OPS.

He keeps this up and that contract is gonna end up looking like a steal for the Sox.

Here’s hoping he doesn’t cool off or get injured for 6 years.

I don’t understand the 6 year injury reference.

Ventura and Tanaka are strong candidates also

    How’s his defense?

    • jwbiii - Apr 27, 2014 at 11:11 PM

Passable, not great. But after years of Paul Konerko, we’re a pretty easy lot to please.

Does he really do that awful home run call after every one?

    • Bryz - Apr 27, 2014 at 9:33 PM

And when there’s a little bit of doubt he also throws in a “Stretch!” or two.

    • braddavery - Apr 27, 2014 at 10:51 PM

What’s wrong with it? Seems pretty harmless and inoffensive to me.

      • baseballisboring - Apr 27, 2014 at 11:39 PM

        It’s corny and obnoxious

We must have very different perceptions of hilarity.

Everytime a white sox player hits a hr I watch it just to here the call

    • themuddychicken - Apr 27, 2014 at 10:51 PM

I have to watch every white sox hr on mute

    • esracerx46 - Apr 27, 2014 at 11:59 PM

After the first hit he says you can cancel the post game show. He also has “ducksnort”, “can of corn” and many others in the arsenal. He’s a bit of a hot topic in Chicago. He cracks me up most of the time, but can see how his homerness(?) Rubs people the wrong way.

    • esracerx46 - Apr 28, 2014 at 12:01 AM

He had a call a few weeks ago where he went through the STRETCH! STRETCH!…YOU CAN PUT IT ON THE BO…….no, he caught it. Hysterical!

White Sox broadcasts have the best announcer (Steve Stone) and the worst (Hawk Harrelson). Hawk is bad enough to make White Sox broadcasts unwatchable for me. He reminds me of the early baseball video games featuring announcers that would repeat the same corny sayings over and over (anyone remember Sega’s SportsTalk Baseball?)

    • esracerx46 - Apr 28, 2014 at 9:20 AM

I remember NHL 94 and sonic the hedgehog on Sega….I’m sure I had it, but I was 5 so it must’ve slipped my mind

    • gret9 - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:48 PM

Same here, I’m a White Sox fan and I can’t stand listening to Hawk. The ONLY thing I like about Hawk is the “You can put it on the board” call. The rest of the crap like him pontificating about the evils of sabermetrics and how only the mythical ‘will to win’ matters drives me nuts!
